One of Sicily's vinous treasures is its plantings of ancient,
indigenous grape varieties. For years, grapes like Grillo, Inzolia, Catarratto
and others were sent off to be absorbed into anonymous Marsala blends.
World demand for true Sicilian Marsala has declined sharply over the
past few decades and innovative Siclilian producers have taken advantage
of indigenous vine varieties like the Grillo to produce fresh and clean
whites of distinctive character. The sea breezes offer moderating
conditions to the vine-dressed hills, allowing for slow ripening and
excellent white wine production.
The Solare 2006 Grillo is a wonderfully fresh, crisp and dry white. It
shows citrus and green apple fruits with hints of flowers and spice.
Medium bodied and dry on the palate, the finish is bright, clean and
lip-smackingly refreshing. Try it with sautéed sole or other white fish,
roast chicken or light pasta preparations. Its delicately spicy style
makes it a fine match to pair with moderately spicy Thai or Szechwan
dishes-not to mention as a refreshing thirst quencher on its own.
