Classical wines of Spain imports a collection of top wines from Spain, including Tinto Pesquera of the Ribera del Duero.  We will have Marshall Jorgensen representing four of these spectacular selections in the store from 5:00 to 7:00 pm.  We will be featuring both red and white selections from this artisan book of wines.  This is a great opportunity to educate yourself of Spanish wines with some of the benchmark producers from the top regions of the country.

The enormously knowledgeable and entertaining Damon Ornowski joins us to pour the wines of two of Austria's most important producers: The legendary Franz Hirtzberger and Austria's greatest winemaking co-operative, Domaine Wachau. The Wachau, located less than an hours drive from downtown Vienna, is the jewel of white wine production in Austria. Comprising a mere 3500 acres(slightly larger than Barolo) of steeply terraced, primary rock vineyards along the Danube River, the Wachau creates the most powerful and chiseled Riesling and Gruner Veltliner Austria is capable of. A great, all white flight to celebrate the flavors of spring.

In a wine world gone mad with reverse osmosis machines, mega purple dyes, de-alcoholization, re-acidification-not to mention the fraudulent addition of international varietals not allowed to be used in classic appellations, it's comforting to consider a winery like Lopez de Heredia. This bastion of traditionalism was founded in 1877 and very little has changed in terms of winemaking since then. The wines-even Gran Reserva whites-can spend close to a decade in cask, and can last for decades after release. This is the greatest of all Riojas, and in the canon of great old school wine estates, Lopez belongs alongside names like Soldera, Vega Sicilia, and Giacomo Conterno. Monday night of the month for me.
