In selecting the bottles that make it to our shelves, we taste literally thousands of wines each year. This month's Red Wine Selection exemplifies the results of this constant search and evaluation. The 2007 Camaleon Malbec from Argentina's Tupungato Valley, a subdistrict of the Mendoza region, offers truly remarkable richness, depth and complexity for its extremely affordable price. Prior to the 1870's and the phylloxera plague, Malbec was widely grown in Bordeaux, and comprised substantial portions of the legendary 1870 Lafite-Rothschild and many others. The cure for phylloxera was grafting onto resistant North American rootstocks and the Malbec did not fare well when grafted. Thus, it was relegated to a very minor role in Bordeaux. The grape took well to Argentina, where sandy soils and flood irrigation have kept phylloxera at bay, and the Malbec produces better wine here than anyplace else on earth. The '07 Camaleon Malbec is an exceptional wine that will delight Bordeaux lovers or anyone who likes good red wine at a great price!

French vintner Jean Bousquet came to Mendoza in 1997 and established his winery in the high altitude Tupungato Valley. Drawn from organically grown grapes, the Camaleon Malbec is a stunning red wine. The bouquet is rich and complex with bright blackberry and plum fruit scents underscored by subtleties of vanilla, earth, herbs, allspice and black pepper. On the palate it is luscious, balanced and smooth. The plummy, cherryish fruit of the Malbec grape is backed by hints of toasty oak, herbs, and spices. The subtle vanilla and spice overtones linger nicely at the finish.
<br>
Try this spicy, velvety red with your favorite rich pasta recipe - it's a surprisingly good match. The '07 Camaleon Malbec also pairs well with a wide range of lamb, beef and richly-flavored fowl dishes and most any grilled food. It will provide marvelous drinking pleasure over the next 2-3 years. At our SPECIAL SALE PRICE, you can enjoy it frequently. Call soon to reserve some.
