We have discovered a sensational value Chardonnay. The delicious 2008 “Goat Door” Chardonnay is made by the Fairview Winery, at the base of Paarl Mountain in South Africa. The estate also produces cheeses, and has 600 milking goats (plus sheep and cows) on the property as well as a distinctive “goat tower” where the goats climb and frolic – hence the goat reference of the label.
The grapes come from three vineyard sites around the ancient granite dome that is Paarl Mountain. The wine spends a short amount of time in barrel to add just a hint of toasty oak complexity without overwhelming the wine.
The 2008 Goat Door Chardonnay offers a lovely bouquet of ripe apple, pear and butter tones that combine with citrus, melon, honey and floral elements. The flavors are bright and exuberant with generous apple, pear and citrus fruits plus the deft touch of vanilla-oak spice that will delight your taste buds. The refreshing acidity adds zest to the crisp, dry finish.
